Air Chihuahua Flies 500th Passenger To Houston

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Twenty Chihuahuas are headed to Houston Tuesday from Los Angeles, including Bubbles, the 500th pup to be flown to his new home as part of the Air Chihuahua program.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles established the Air Chihuahua program in 2009 in an effort to match the huge supply of Chihuahuas in Southern California with demand for the small dogs in other areas of the country.

Since 2009, Southern California's Chihuahuas have flown to Texas, Washington, Colorado, Florida and even Canada.

"Air Chihuahua is 100 percent donor driven," SPCALA President Madeline Bernstein said in a statement.

The society's next Air Chihuahua flight is scheduled for Sept. 30 to Miami.
