Agencies Join Forces To Raise Awareness Of Water Conservation During Ongoing Drought

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — Water conservation is critical during California's ongoing drought, a message that several local water agencies spread on Sunday.

Hundreds gathered at the Descanso Gardens for a seminar that offered residents tips on reducing water use.

"It's kinda fun actually," says Jerri Lamb, a Burbank resident, who is conserving water.

"I collect water from the shower and try to water all the plants," she said.

Rain Bird helped sponsor the event and showed off its new devices for irrigation, including drip line products.

The event included information on drought-tolerant plants as well as a lesson on what to water.

"Water your trees even during a drought," Jeanette Meyer of Burbank Water and Power said.

"You want to water around the drip line of the tree out near the edge of the canopy 'cause that's where the roots that absorbed the water are," Tim Wheeler, a horticulturist, said.

The city of Burbank is helping with that by giving away free recycled water on Saturdays this fall.

"That's something great for trees, your landscape, for anything you want to use it for except drinking," Meyer said.

Although sprinklers are limited to two days a week in most communities, recycled water is not.
