Age Restrictions For Popular 'Hoverboards' Go Into Effect Friday
SACRAMENTO (CBSLA.com) — New regulations for "hoverboards" that were so popular this holiday season go into effect Friday with an eye on increasing safety on the wheeled devices, the CHP said, and could affect millions who received the boards, especially those younger than 16.
The new law defines "electronically motorized board" as a wheeled device designed to be stood on and powered by electronic propulsion, going no more than 15 mph, the Highway Patrol said.
The law will require boards ridden on a highway with a speed limit of 35 mph or less or on specific designated bikeways. Riders will need to be at least 16 years old and must wear bicycle helmets.
The law also requires the boards be equipped with reflectors and lights for nighttime use.
Cities and counties will be authorized to restrict the use of the boards.
Riders will not be permitted to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on the devices, and violators could be fined $250 if found under the influence.
