After Expansion, OC Register Cuts Staff
LOS ANGELES (AP) — After an aggressive staff expansion that defied trends in the struggling newspaper industry, the Orange County Register is reducing its ranks.
In a memo to staff Thursday afternoon, publisher Aaron Kushner said 32 people are leaving the paper, including top editor Ken Brusic and several top deputies.
Kushner and a business partner bought the paper in 2012. They quickly added editorial staff, nearly doubling the newsroom to 370, and increased page counts in a heavy bet on print over digital news distribution.
Freedom Communications, which owns the Register, also launched a new daily paper in Long Beach, purchased the Riverside Press-Enterprise and plans a new daily for Los Angeles. On Wednesday, 39 jobs were cut at the Press-Enterprise.
