Marina Del Rey Woman Busted Crime At Her Mother's Home With Her iPhone

MARINA DEL REY (CBSLA.com) — Someone stole a security camera from an elderly San Diego woman's home. Then the victim's daughter, who lives in Marina del Rey, was shocked by the images she found on her mobile phone.

Naomi, who didn't want to give her last name, had a security camera set up in her mother's home in San Diego. The camera allows her to check on her mom on her iPhone.

But when she checked on her mom, she saw a stranger in an unfamiliar home, sleeping on the couch, other times playing video games and even sweeping the floor.

"I was first shocked. I didn't know why I was looking at someone else's home when I am expecting the camera in my mother's home," said Naomi.

CBS2/KCAL9 did not show the man's face because police have not confirmed whether the man in the video is the suspect. But Naomi said the only person who had been in her mom's home was a Time Warner Cable technician to fix the Internet.

She said her mother recognized the man in the video as the same man who was in her home. Naomi believes the technician stole the camera but never changed the settings. So the feed was all coming into Naomi's iPhone. She immediately called police.

"My first thought was: wow this guy's going to be the world's dumbest criminals," she said.

CBS2/KCAL9 reached out to TWC, which released this statement: "We are aware of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the San Diego Police Department. We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with law enforcement."

Naomi said she used her mobile phone to screen grab an image of the footage hoping police will use it to help track down the thief. She said investigators did identify a suspect but have not arrested the person.
