8, Including 2 Young Girls, Injured In Crash At End Of West Covina Chase

WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Eight people were injured in a three-vehicle collision in West Covina during a chase of a possible drunken driver that ended after a man ran a stop sign, according to police.

The collision took place at the intersection of Francisquito and Walnut avenues about 8 p.m. Monday, West Covina police said.

According to police, Robert Lopez, 26, of La Puente tried to take off when two officers in a patrol car tried to pull his white Acura over. When the Acura reached the intersection of Francisquito and Walnut, it blew through the stop sign and crashed into two vehicles that were already at the intersection, a police spokesman said.

A white Nissan Maxima driven by a woman with her 7-year-old and 8-month-old daughters was heading northbound on Walnut when they were struck by the Acura. The 8-month-old girl was last reported in serious condition. The current condition of her mother and sister were not known Tuesday morning.

The other vehicle was a Ford Expedition occupied by two women and two men. There was no word on who was driving, and all four were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions were not known.

Lopez, the suspected drunk driver, was also taken to a hospital with injuries. He will be booked on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries and felony evading, police said.

The investigation on the crash will be handled by the California Highway Patrol.
