7 Middle School Students On Field Trip Splashed By Diesel Fuel From Disabled Bus

GLENDALE (CBSLA.com) — Seven Sunrise Elementary School students on a field trip were taken to a hospital to be examined Tuesday after being splashed by diesel fuel.

The bus driver pulled onto the right shoulder of the northbound Glendale (2) Freeway near the interchange with the Foothill (210) Freeway at about 10:30 a.m. after the fuel line sustained damage and ruptured, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Saul Gomez said.

About 40 fifth grade students and two teachers were aboard the bus at the time, and seven girls were sprayed with some fuel when the fuel pump were malfunctioned, officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District said. The seven girls were taken to three area hospitals as a precaution.

Parents for all 40 students have been contacted and no more injuries were reported. The students, who were from Sunrise Elementary School in Boyle Heights, were en route to Clear Creek Camp and continued on their trip in a replacement bus, LAUSD officials said.
