Suspect responsible for carnival crash in South LA now in custody

At least six people were injured Saturday night after a driver drove through a barricade and into a crowd people at a street carnival in South Los Angeles. 

The crash took place near the 3830 block of Trinity Street and King Boulevard.

Authorities said that this was not a terrorist or targeted incident. CBSLA Reporter Lauren Pozen has learned that police attempted to pull over the suspect for a traffic stop. 

The suspect did not want to stop and eventually plowed through a barricade just after 8 p.m. The suspect was identified Sunday as Steven Weems, a 23-year-old man who was arrested for felony hit and run, CBSLA Reporter Jake Reiner has learned.

He is being held on $50,000 bail. 

The man then hit cars on the street and six people, who fortunately only suffered minor injuries.

The suspect then fled the scene and was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to LAPD.

The suspect was identified Sunday as Steven Weems, a 23-year-old man who was arrested for felony hit and run, CBSLA Reporter Jake Reiner has learned.

He is being held on $50,000 bail. 

While it's unclear the condition of the victims, the Los Angeles Fire Department has reported that at least six people were injured by the crash. 

The victims are described to be in the age of 15 to 40-years-old. All six were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to LAFD.

Oscar Berumen was at the carnival with his family when the driver plowed through the barricade. 

"Pandemonium was happening," Berumen told Reiner. "I'm just watching out, I'm letting my daughter ride the rides, in the meantime I'm just looking all around pretty much."

Cell phone video showed people running and screaming as the white SUV plowed into the crowd of people.
