Police: 5K Pounds Of Illegal Fireworks Stacked In South LA Apartment

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police on Tuesday discovered more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks stacked in a small South Los Angeles apartment.

An unidentified person called authorities to report fireworks being loaded and unloaded near West 37th Street and Normandie Avenue.

KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports it wasn't long before the neighborhood had to be evacuated.

"They just told us to evacuate because someone had a bomb or like, an explosive," a woman said.

It wasn't a bomb, but police had to use a box truck to take away the fireworks.

"There were definitely dangerous fireworks. These were definitely the commercial-grade, high-end. Fireworks of that magnitude, 5,000 pounds ... that can definitely be a dangerous situation," LAPD Sgt. Richard Fox said.

No arrests have been made.
