57 Years Later, Letter Arrives To Its Destination

REDLANDS (CBSLA.com) — A letter that has been lost for half a century has finally been delivered.

Steve Spiller has had a P.O. Box in Redlands for 33 years.

He recently received a letter that was dated June 14, 1957 from Kennebunkport, Maine.

It was delayed due to an incorrect zip code.

"It just kind of made my day," Spiller said. "It's such an oddity…and you hear about letters being lost."

Spiller suspects the letter, which was addressed to Winslow Randall, was for his P.O. Box's previous owner.

Spiller has done some research on Randall, who died in the 1980s.

"Turned out he was this phenomenal bridge player," he said.

The note was about room rates at the Bonnie Brig Tea Room, something Randall had inquired about.

"The lodging was great. It was like, $8 or $10 a night with food," Spiller said.

Spiller doesn't know why the letter turned up after all these years, but plans on giving it to a local museum.
