5-Year-Old Girl Killed, 3 Injured In San Juan Capistrano Parking Lot Crash

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (CBSLA.com) — Officials said a 5-year-old girl was killed and three other children injured in a crash in a San Juan Capistrano parking lot Saturday.

The driver, believed to be the dead girl's father, may be arrested for suspected manslaughter and child endangerment, officials said.

Yuliana Brito was a passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by Antolin Brito, 30, who was reportedly speeding.

Brito apparently missed the end of a street at about 6:50 p.m. Saturday and the car careened down an embankment, deputies said.

Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock told the Orange County Register it appears speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The SUV had been driven west on Junipero Serra Road and sped through its end at the T-shaped intersection at Camino Capistrano, deputies said. The SUV kept going through the parking lot of Silverado Senior Living, 30311 Camino Capistrano, hit a curb, and fell down an embankment. The SUV stopped just shot of the Metrolink/Amtrak railroad tracks, sheriff's Lt. Jerry Carlson told CNS.

Deputies found Brito and his four passengers -- ages to 2 to 12 -- badly hurt, with injuries described as moderate, major and fatal. Deputies performed CPR on Yuliana before paramedics rushed the 5-year-old to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:05 p.m. Saturday, according to the Coroner's Office.
