2 Children Dead, 3 More People Hurt After Car Careens Off Side Of Road In Azusa

AZUSA (CBSLA.com)  —  At least five people were injured -- two fatally -- after a car went over the side of a steep road in Azusa Saturday.

The car -- a SUV -- reportedly slid about 50 feet down the side of an embankment and then rolled over, authorities said.

The vehicle was not visible from the road. Firefighters had to use a ladder truck to get rescuers to the victims.

The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. at San Gabriel Road and Mountain Laurel, authorities said.

The vehicle veered off the road for unknown reasons.

"Several officers had to work their way down to the bottom of the ravine where they found five victims who had been since the car ," said Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe with the Azusa Police Department.

Cristy Fajardo reporting from the scene for KCAL9 said two adults and a 13-year-old girl were transported to the hospital. The two dead are children, believed to be between the ages of 8 and 12.

Rescuers reportedly performed CPR on at least one of the passengers.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
