5 In Custody After Officer-Involved Shooting Prompted 2 Pursuits In Boyle Heights

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — An officer-involved shooting that prompted two separate pursuits was under investigation early Wednesday morning.

The incident began around 11:15 p.m. when two officers were searching for a vehicle wanted in connection with multiple shootings that took place over the weekend.

When they spotted a white van matching the description, they requested air and ground backup and approached the three suspects.

An unspecified encounter took place with one armed suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred. That suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At that time, a second suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly caught and taken into custody.

A third suspect, who was still inside the van, then took off, which prompted a pursuit.

A few blocks away he crashed into a parked car and bailed out on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, he was tackled and taken into custody.

Two other people nearby were taken into custody after police say they tried to help them escape.

All three incidents were under investigation as bodily force was used in the arrests. It was unclear if the first suspect fired shots at police.
