5-Year-Old Girl In Serious Condition After Being Shot In South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Doctors were racing to save a 5-year-old girl who was shot in South Los Angeles Wednesday night as detectives tried to piece together what happened.

According to police, the shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. inside of a home on Woodlawn Avenue near E. 41st Place. When police arrived, they found a little girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was rushed to the hospital in what medics call a "scoop and run," with an escort from the Los Angeles Police Department.

"It's sad, because it was a little girl, and my husband knows the family, so it was sad," a neighbor said.

Authorities said several family members were home at the time of the shooting, but said it was too early in the investigation to determine whether the shot was self-inflicted, an accident or a criminal act.

"They're just a quiet family," the neighbor said.

Police did not have many details, but said the girl was still being treated at the hospital.

"My understanding is that she's in very serious condition," Lt. Raul Jovel, of the LAPD, said. "I don't know if she's been downgraded, if she's still critical or not critical. I know she's still being treated in the emergency room. I don't have any details as to whether it's critical or not."
