4 San Bernardino Schools Locked Down After Shooting Near Campus

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Four San Bernardino City Unified School District schools were briefly placed on a security lockdown Tuesday after a shooting near a middle school.

The  lockdown came just hours after the Los Angeles Unified School District closed its doors to students due to a security threat that was later determined to be a hoax.

About 10 a.m., a shooting that happened off campus was heard on the campus of Shandin Hills Middle School, prompting a lockdown at that school as well as Holcomb Elementary for about five minutes. Two other schools -- Dave Brown Elementary and Arrowview Middle School -- were also placed on lockdown for a few minutes, the Press-Enterprise reported.

"Everybody just got down under the tables, and we just stayed quiet there," a student, Juan, said.

Juan's mom, Rosa Medina, pulled him and his big sister out of school early after news spread of the lockdown.

"My mom says that she is just scared that something bad will happen to us," another student, Adriana, said.

School districts in Riverside and Corona used social media to inform parents that schools were open and extra police would patrol campuses.

Many parents are on edge after the attack two weeks ago in San Bernardino that killed 14 people.

Some parents opted to keep their children out of school Tuesday.

"I think it's better safe than sorry," Joseph Rivas of Riverside said.

San Bernardino Valley College was also closed Tuesday due to a threat made to the school Monday.

Law enforcement sought to ease concerns.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure all the precautionary measures are taken," said Cpl. Cameron Nelson of the Rialto Police Department. "We have extra officers out here, but at this time, there's no real need to worry."

The shooting victim was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, the Press-Enterprise reported.
