4 Reported Rapes At CSUN Dorms In Less Than 2 Months Have Students Concerned

NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — Four reported rapes at the University Park Student Housing dorms at Cal State Northridge in less than two months had students concerned.

The most recent rape was reported last Thursday.

This week, the school sent out an email reading in part: "Each victim knew or was acquainted with the alleged perpetrator. The safety of the campus community, beyond those involved in these incidents, was never in jeopardy and, as is the case in all such instances, did not lead to the issuance of a campus-wide safety warning."

A spokesperson reiterated over the phone that because the parties involved were acquaintances, there was no apparent threat to the campus.

Some students disagree. "I think that the threat is always out there. It's just a coincidence that it happened between people that knew each other, may be those were just the ones reported," Isabel Ramirez said.

"I was really shocked to hear that it happened here at CSUN especially since we have so much police protection and the gates over there," said student Daisy Ramirez.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five women will experience rape at some point in their lifetime and one in 71 for men.

Moreover, 19 percent of undergrad women have experienced attempted or completed sexual assault since entering college, the CDC said.

CSUN maintains it is committed to eradicating sexual assault and requires all students to take prevention education about rape culture and consent.
