4 Hurt, 1 Critically, During Boating Accident Near Avalon

AVALON (CBSLA.com) — Officials say a man is critically injured and three others are in fair condition Sunday morning after their small fishing boat ran into rocks at Santa Catalina Island.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m., when a small boat hit rocks at Long Point, a lighthouse about halfway between Two Harbors and Avalon on the island's north shore, L.A. County fire dispatcher Ray Dong said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County lifeguards were alerted by radio.

Four boaters, all male, were brought ashore at 3:38 a.m. near 215 Sumner Ave. in Avalon, where they were met by county paramedics.

A county lifeguard boat raced the men 30 miles across the channel to San Pedro as the sun rose. City firefighters met the county boat at the waterfront fire station near the 22nd Street Landing at 6:17 a.m., according to Katherine Main, of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Paramedics took the four boaters to an area hospital.
