3 Arrested In Murder Of Former Garfield High Football Star

EAST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Three men were in custody Friday in connection with the shooting death of a former Garfield High School football player, authorities said.

Jonathon Gonzalez, 28, Roque Solis, 30, and Anthony Gabriel, 25, were taken into custody last week and booked on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Gabriel Soto. Soto was shot to death in the 600 block of South McDonnell Avenue on May 25, 2013.

Bail for the suspects ranged from $2 million to $3 million, and all three are scheduled to make their first court appearances on Jan. 5, according to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff's officials say Soto was a student at Lincoln University in Missouri, where he was playing football on a scholarship and studying electrical engineering. He was home visiting with friends when he was fatally shot at a party, where one of his friends suffered a leg wound.

In honor of Gabriel, the Lincoln University Blue Tigers retired football jersey number 33.
