Officers on patrol found the two-car crash at about 1:40 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 21st Street.

The intersection, which is just about a mile from Long Beach Poly High and Roosevelt Elementary School, was closed for several hours for the fatal crash investigation.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 44-year-old Los Angeles woman was driving a 2017 Honda Civic north on Pacific Avenue when she hit a blue 2015 Toyota Camry. The Honda's driver was in critical but stable condition, along with her passenger, a 30-year-old man from Gardena.

A passenger in the Camry, a woman between 25 and 30 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's driver, a 21-year-old Long Beach woman, died at the hospital.  Both their names were withheld pending notification of their families.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the collision, and detectives are working to determine drugs or alcohol were also involved.

Anyone who witnessed the collision can contact Long Beach police Collision Investigation Detective Kevin matter or Detective Shawn Loughlin at (562) 570-7355.
