2 Marines Killed In Helicopter Crash During Training Exercise At Twentynine Palms Base

TWENTYNINE PALMS (CBSLA.com) — Two Marines were killed Friday when their helicopter crashed during a training exercise in Twentynine Palms, according to the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar.

A Third Marine Aircraft Wing helicopter crashed at approximately 4:30 p.m. while flying near the Marine Corps Ground Combat Center.

Both Marines onboard died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Their identities were not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the two Marines we lost in this tragic accident," said Third Marine Aircraft Wing Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Michael A. Rocco.

"We at Third Marine Aircraft Wing stand ready to provide support to their families."

The incident is under investigation by military authorities.
