Mother, Daughter Killed In Fontana House Fire

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — A 43-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter were killed after a second-alarm fire engulfed their house in Fontana during powerful winds early Monday morning.

Just after 1 a.m., firefighters received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke and visible flames at a home located in the 17700 block of Owen Street, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Upon arrival, crews located heavy smoke and flames coming from three sides of the single-story home.

Firefighters knocked out the flames in 30 minutes and found the victims' bodies in a bedroom in the back of the house.

Firefighters said the heaving winds helped fuel the flames that started on the patio, then spread to the garage and into the bedroom.

Battalion Chief Doug Nelson said even the working smoke alarms failed to alert the victims. "The fire was very very well fueled with the winds. Conditions on scene when we first pulled in to the street here, very limited visibility. We have smoke up and down the road." he said.
