Elderly Driver, Passenger Killed In Crash Into Glendale Supermarket

GLENDALE (CBSLA.com) — Two women believed to be in their 70s were killed Thursday when a car one of them was driving crashed in the parking lot of a Ralphs supermarket in Glendale, police said.

The accident happened at about 1:15 p.m. near the street level entrance of the underground parking area in the 600 block of East Wilson Avenue, Glendale city spokesman Tom Lorenz said.

An elderly driver lost control and struck a pole at a high rate of speed, Lorenz said. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the vehicle drove into the south entrance of the garage off Wilson Avenue and raced through the garage for unknown reasons.

It's not known yet if the accident was caused by a medical or mechanical issue.

"Very, very lucky no other injuries occurred," Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot said.
