Fire Erupts During Standoff At South Gate Apartment Building

SOUTH GATE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities investigated reports of a gunman who opened fire on officials on Tuesday from inside of an apartment building that erupted in flames.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, authorities were sent shortly after 4 a.m. to the 5600 block of Gardendale Street near Garfield Avenue to assist the South Gate Police Department with a barricade situation.

Upon their arrival, crews located heavy fire and smoke showing from the apartment building.

Firefighters said shots may have been fired from inside the building towards first responders at the scene.

Paramedics transported two people for treatment of minor injuries. It remains unclear if the victims are residents of the building or are city officials.

A preliminary investigation revealed residents in the immediate area were evacuated due to a gas leak, which subsequently caused the fire to erupt in the apartment building.

Crews have knocked down the blaze.

Authorities said one man has been taken into custody.
