2 Injured, 1 Requires Extrication From Plane Following Crash At Catalina Airport
AVALON (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said two people were injured and one had to be extricated out of a single-engine plane following a crash just short of the runway at Catalina Airport.
The plane -- a Cessna 172 -- had a pilot and one passenger and crashed at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration.
Firefighters had to free a person trapped in the wreckage and tend to another victim that was ejected from the aircraft after it crashed, according to Ed Pickett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The LAFD also deployed two helicopters to assist in the rescue, Pickett said.
Both victims were flown to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Their conditions were not available, another county fire department dispatcher said.
The single-engine plane had departed from Long Beach, Gregor said.
According to the N number he provided, its registration was pending and listed the possible owner as living in Long Beach.
