3 Dead, 25 Injured After Boat Overturns In San Diego
SAN DIEGO (CBSLA) — At least three people died and 29 others survived after a boat overturned in San Diego County, suspected of being part of a migrant smuggling operation.
The incident Sunday was reported near 200 Catalina near the Cabrillo Monument, firefighters said. Both firefighters and lifeguards, along with other agencies, responded to assist.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard Monday, 32 people were accounted for. The Coast Guard Sunday initially reported that four people were declared dead, then downgraded it to three on Monday.
In all, 25 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Of those, at least one person required CPR assistance.
Authorities believe the boat was part of a possible human smuggling operation.
"Conditions were pretty rough, 5 to 6 feet of surf, windy, cold, the waters around 60 degrees so it's you get hypothermia pretty quickly," added Romero.
Coast Guard crews searched overnight Sunday before suspending the search Monday morning.
