$2.5K Reward Offered In Long Beach Pelican Mutilation

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A $2,500 reward was being offered Tuesday for information leading to the arrest of the those responsible for mutilating a pelican.

Animal Care Services found the California brown pelican with its pouch slashed on April 16 in the 5400 block of Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach.

Officials said the injury was unusual and the type of cut indicates it was intentionally done.

The animal was recently removed from the endangered species list, but it is a crime to hurt migratory birds, the OC Register reported.

The pelican was being cared for at a San Pedro facility and will have to undergo surgery.

Anyone with information should contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (310)328-1516.
