1 Dead, Multiple Pedestrians Injured In Redondo Beach Hit-And-Run

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed and multiple pedestrians were injured Wednesday in what police suspect was a hit-and-run accident involving a motorist accused of drunken driving.

Redondo Beach Police Department and Fire Department personnel responded to the scene at Pacific Coast Highway and Vincent Street around 8 p.m. after the accident, according to Sgt. Shawn Freeman.

The group was leaving a Christmas performance at St. James Catholic Church when the accident occurred in the crosswalk.

"Preliminary information provided to RBPD is that a motor vehicle drove north bound on Pacific Coast Highway through the intersection of Vincent Street, striking several pedestrians, the vehicle continued driving, ultimately colliding head on into another vehicle," Freeman stated in a news release.

The number of injured parties was not immediately confirmed. However, preliminary information received by Redondo Beach police indicates about 12 people were injured, many critically.

An adult transported from the scene later died in the hospital, according to Lt. Joe Hoffman. At least one child was among those injured, he said.

The driver was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

California Highway Patrol is on the scene, with the intersection expected to remain closed for hours.
