1,000-Gallon Sewage Spill Closes Stretch Of Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) – A sewage spill Monday closed a long stretch of the Newport Bay coastline.

An "operator error" during routine maintenance on a sewer line lead sent about 1,000 gallons of sewage into the Newport Bay waters, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The beach remained closed Tuesday to water contact sports from Bayside Drive to China Cove, a stretch of about one mile.

It will remain closed until water quality testing deems it safe.
