100 Gallons Of Diesel Spilled On 5 Freeway Off-Ramp

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Authorities worked Thursday morning to clean up 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled after a crash on the 7th Street off-ramp from the Golden State (5) Freeway.

A car exiting the freeway in Boyle Heights ran a stop sign at the end of the off-ramp, slammed into the back of a tanker truck – causing the fuel spill – then hit another vehicle, which flipped over, at about 2:25 a.m. at the bottom of the 7th Street off-ramp, LAPD Sgt. Alex Mendoza said.

After the crash, the tanker started leaking diesel, an amount that appeared to total about 100 gallons, he said.

"We called the LAPD HazMat team to the scene and they are in the process of cleaning up the spill," Mendoza said. "The intersection there is closed and we estimate it will be shut down for several more hours," he said early this morning. The closure will likely complicate the morning drive through that area for commuters.

No injuries were reported, he said.

The California Highway Patrol declared a SigAlert and shut down the 7th Street off-ramp from the 5 Freeway. The off-ramp was reopened after 8 a.m., but authorities are discussing with Department of Transportation officials the possibility of closing it down again.
