$10 Bill Will Feature Portrait Of A Woman In 2020

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Jacob J. Lew, Secretary of the Treasury, on Wednesday announced that the $10 bill was undergoing a redesign.

He also said that the bill would feature the image of a woman.

"The next generation of currency will revolve around the theme of democracy. The first note, the new $10, will feature a notable woman. In keeping with that theme, it's important that you make your voice heard," said the Treasury's website.

The site added, "Use #TheNew10 to tell us your ideas, symbols, designs or any other feedback that can inform the Secretary as he considers options for the $10 redesign."

Lew said he was proud to announce that the new bill will be the "first bill in more than a century to feature the portrait of a woman. This historic endeavor has been years in the making."

The bill will mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment giving American women the right to vote.

CBS2's Andrea Fujii spoke to many Angelenos -- they seemed to favor former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and poet/actress/activist Maya Angelou.

Martha Washington appeared on the $1 note, and Pocohontas appeared on the back of the $20 bill -- both in the 1800s.

"I think it's just about about time to have a woman be honored,"  said Pilar Crisostomo, a LA resident.
