Suspects Sought, 1 In Custody Following Pursuit, Crash And Gunfire In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday said one suspect was in custody and they were searching for at least one more after a chase ended in a crash and gunfire in South LA.

Investigators said two officers were patrolling an area known for aggravated assaults around 1: 30 a.m. when a citizen rushed up and said a man had a gun.

"Officers attempted to go ahead and make contact. The individuals ran to a vehicle and a pursuit ensued," Sgt. Frank Preciado said. "The suspect vehicle collided with other parked cars just shortly thereafter."

The suspect in the passenger side of the vehicle attempted to get out of the car and was arrested.

The second suspect took off running and turned "around, points a gun at the officer and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Sgt. Preciado said.

The man fled the scene on foot. No officers were injured.

More than 100 officers, K-9 units and SWAT members patrolled a two-block radius near W. 52nd Street and Manhattan place until the later morning when the search was called off.

A suspect description was not released.
