"The driver of the big rig was on the freeway in the number four lane, had a coughing fit, lost control of his vehicle, came down the embankment and onto the on ramp," CHP Officer Ming Hsu said.

The truck then barreled into an SUV and vehicle waiting at a stop sign, pushing them into the intersection. The big rig then broadsided a pickup truck, which then hit a dump truck.

The driver of the pickup truck, a man in his 30s, was trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people were transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills and Northridge Hospital with various injuries.

Investigators were looking into whether distracted driving or intoxication were involved in the crash.

"At this point, there are no indication of any of those," Officer Hsu said.

The off and on ramp to Paxton Street were closed during the investigation.
