Suspect Killed In Huntington Beach OIS

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Huntington Beach Saturday night.

Huntington Beach police were dispatched after receiving a call at 5:25 p.m. about a reckless driver in a dark SUV forcing cars off the road.

Police saw the suspect vehicle on Ellis Avenue and Gothard Street and began a brief pursuit before the suspect had a small collision with a tree at Ernest Drive and Gothard, according to Lt. Mitch O'Brien.

"As the officer arrived the suspect got out of the vehicle carrying a handgun and began walking onto... the driveway of a residence. The officer asked him to stop and drop the gun. The suspect turned and pointed the gun at the officer who fired and hit the suspect," O'Brien said.

Officers rendered first aid. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he later died.

Police do not have a motive.

The identities of the suspect and the officer were not immediately released.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department has taken over the case.

It was unclear if the suspect had fired any rounds.

Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene.
