Firefighters were called to a one-story home in the 4700 block of East Klamath Place at about 8:40 a.m. After firefighters cut through window bars, they were able to put out the flames within 13 minutes.

A man believed to be about 80 years old was rescued from the home, but firefighters were unable to save a woman in her 60s found inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to the hospital in fair condition.

Los Angeles Fire's arson investigators were deployed to the scene, but LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said firefighters found no functioning smoke alarms in the 1920s home.
