2 Dead Following South LA Hit-And-Run, Police Looking For Suspect

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Police are searching for a driver who fatally struck two pedestrians in South Los Angeles Tuesday night.

The accident happened on Normandie Avenue near 95th Street about 8:30 p.m. One of the pedestrians, a 47-year-old man, died on the scene. The other victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Family members were on the scene of the accident and said the two men, who were friends, were crossing 95th Street when a driver in a Mercedes sedan heading down Normandie Avenue hit the men and drove off.

"The family is on scene and that's always emotional to see something like this both for the family and for the emergency workers," Sgt. Steven Robinson, of the CHP, said.

California Highway Patrol said the license plate fell off the vehicle and was left behind, allowing officers to track the owner of the vehicle to a nearby home.

Police said there was no sign of the suspect at the home and that they believe the driver ditched the vehicle and ran.

The investigation is ongoing.
