1 Dead, 2 Injured In Wrong-Way Crash On 5 Freeway In San Juan Capistrano

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (CBSLA.com)  — A man was killed and two other people were injured early Saturday morning when a car traveling the wrong way on the northbound 5 freeway in San Juan Capistrano crashed head-on into another car.

The crash occurred in the northbound 5 HOV lane near Junipero Serra Road shortly before 2 a.m., shutting down the northbound lanes of the freeway until about 6 a.m.

The wrong-way driver, who was driving a white BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of a black sedan struck by the BMW was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The passenger in the black sedan also suffered undisclosed injuries.

The California Highway Patrol said it received a call about the wrong-way driver traveling at speeds as high as 100 mph prior to the crash. The driver traveled the wrong way on the freeway for at least 10 miles, investigators said.

The CHP is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
