Man Shot And Killed By Law Enforcement Officers In Grass Valley

GRASS VALLEY (CBS13) - One man is dead in Grass Valley after allegedly refusing to obey officers' orders to drop the weapon he was carrying. He may have been trying to have an officer shoot him.

Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, the man was reportedly seen walking on Squirrel Creek Road and Adam Avenue, carrying a shotgun over his shoulder.  Law enforcement officers from the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and Grass Valley Police Department arrived on scene and made contact with the man at the intersection of Oak and Walker drives.

After refusing to comply with orders by police to drop the shotgun, an officer shot the suspect with a taser, but it had no effect. Officers then fired their weapons at the man, striking him. They then administered first aid to the man, but he was later pronounced dead at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

His identity is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.

Police say the man had previously made statements regarding "suicide by cop", and in a previous incident, one of the man's guns was taken for safekeeping.

The Nevada County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.
