Firefighters Battle Citrus Heights House Fire In Triple Digits

CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) — A woman is recovering from burns after her Citrus Heights home caught fire, Wednesday afternoon.

The frightening moments played out on Glass Slipper Way as the fire quickly spread to the house next door and smoke billowed into the air.

Heavy fire shot out of the roofs of two homes as crews battled the flames in triple-digit temperatures. The woman was able to get out, but sadly, not with all her pets.

Before even firefighters arrived, CBS13 cameras and crew were first on the scene, working a different story, when all of a sudden they turned around to see smoke coming from a home.

Flames ripped through the home on Glass Slipper Way and Carriage Court quickly, shooting out feet in the air out of the garage and attic area.

A young woman fled the fire with her dog and sat across the street in disbelief. She was the only one home when the fire started, but she left without all of her animals.

She was treated for minor burns and said she had seven cats inside and was desperate to get to them.

As she waited for firefighters, her father pulled up in a state of panic and ran toward the burning house before his daughter called him back.

Sacramento Metro Fire quickly jumped into action, working to control the flames as the fire spread to the home next door.

Fire Captain Chris Vestal said they 100-degree temperatures made the firefight that much more challenging.

"A hot day like this, it takes a lot longer, we request a lot of extra bodies, to go through all that work," Vestal said.

Firefighters said three cats were killed and the others are unaccounted for.

A quiet afternoon in Citrus Heights turned into a smokey and fiery nightmare. Now, two families are left without a home.

Investigators think the fire started in the kitchen, but the cause is still under investigation.
