Man Who Shot Cop's Gun In East Sac Being Charged With Attempted Murder

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - There were some scary moments for police in East Sacramento this morning after a suspect managed to gain control of an officer's weapon and was able to fire it.

The incident began at 63rd and Elvis.

Police say officers were able to detain the suspect and take his knife. They then took him to Mercy Hospital nearby for a mental health evaluation. But, the suspect managed to get away.

Police say an officer was able to catch up with the suspect at 39th and H.  That's when the suspect allegedly grabbed the officer's firearm.

"Our officer attempted to regain control of his weapon, and during the struggle, the suspect fired the officer's weapon," said Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Vance Chandler.

Police say an off-duty firefighter near the scene ran to help the officer and was able, with the officer, to gain control of the suspect and get the gun back in control of the officer.

The suspect is now in custody facing charges of attempted murder of the officer.

Police say the officer only has minor injuries.
