9-Year-Old Boy Killed While Playing With Shotgun At Detroit Home

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot, police say, as he was playing with a shotgun at his home on Detroit's west side.

Police said the shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. Monday on Barton Street, near Livernois and Tireman. The boy received a gunshot wound to the body.

There was another child home at the time of the shooting, as well as the boy's father, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

It was not immediately clear if the gun owner would face charges as an investigation continues.

"This is a strong reminder," said Craig. "It seems like these accidents happen more times during the holiday season, so...we're gonna remind and we're gonna continue to push out the message of firearm safety."

"Clearly, a 9-year-old or any young person should not have access to firearms in a home. It shouldn't happen," Craig said. "There is never an excuse for that; never."

Neighbors and family members gathered in front of the home, which was surrounded by police tape, later Monday afternoon.

Reported WWJ's Jon Hewett, "Many are in disbelief, shaking their heads; obviously a very sad situation here."

The boy's name was not immediately released.
