Workwear Maker Carhartt To Expand, Add 215 New Jobs In Dearborn

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A planned expansion for an iconic workwear company will mean new jobs in metro Detroit.

According to the Michigan Economic Developement Corp., Carhartt — known for its popular, sturdy jackets and pants —will invest $18 million into its Dearborn headquarters, adding 215 additional positions.

This comes after the state awarded the company a $1.3 million grant.

The brand has been made in Dearborn for 126 years.

"Michigan was chosen over competing sites on the east and west coasts where top-tier talent related to the garment industry is more readily available," the MEDC said, in a news release.

The city of Dearborn has offered support to the project in the form of an eight-year property tax abatement.

Carhartt recently made local headlines when it opened its flagship store in Detroit's up-and-coming Midtown area.
