Worker Jumps From Van Moments Before Train Collision

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a construction worker jumped out of his vehicle to avoid being struck by a train in Clinton Township.

The accident happened early Tuesday morning on Weybridge Street, just north of Metro Parkway and Groesbeck Highway.

Officials say construction crews have been working on the tracks over the past few days. One of the workers was driving to the job site when he attempted to cross the tracks and his van somehow became stuck -- just as a train was approaching.

With only a few seconds to spare, the worker jumped out of his van moments before the train collided with his vehicle. Officials say the man walked away from the accident uninjured.

"I'm looking at this van and it is pretty much demolished," WWJ's Bill Szumanski reported from above the scene in Chopper 950. "After the impact, this train is now completely stopped in its tracks."

Metro Parkway was blocked by the train for nearly two hours while police investigated, but has since reopened.
