Work Moves Forward On $32M Restoration Of Historic Flint Theater

FLINT (AP) - Work is moving forward on a $32 million restoration of Flint's Capitol Theatre.

The Flint Journal reports about 1,000 visitors toured the building on Thursday evening and got an update on the project just days after a $15 million gift from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation was announced to boost the project.

Mayor Karen Weaver said she, like so many Flint residents, spent a lot of time at the theater years ago. She says the project will help revive the city's downtown.

Organizers say they hope to have the ornate, atmospheric theater, which opened in 1928, fully restored during a 14-16 month renovation project. The theater portion of the building closed about 20 years ago. A grand reopening is planned for late 2017 or early 2018.
