Woman Upset After Box Of Cremated Remains Damaged In Mail

FREMONT, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan woman is upset that a box containing her sister's cremated remains was damaged while it was mailed from California.

Janice Martin of Fremont tells WZZM-TV there were ashes around the edges of the package when it arrived in the mail. Her sister died in February and the remains were shipped by a nephew from a post office in Elk Grove.

Stickers on the cardboard shipping box indicated the contents were cremated remains, but Martin says "at some point, the box was punctured." Martin says the remains were in a plastic bag, canvas bag and plastic box that were sealed inside the box.

Sabrina Todd, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service's Greater Michigan District, says it's not clear how the package was damaged and they're apologizing.
