Woman Dies After Falling From Boat Into Stony Creek Lake

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ/AP) -- A woman has died after she and her husband fell into a Detroit-area lake.

The couple was on Stony Creek Lake in Stony Creek Metropark when their rented canoe or boat flipped over as the husband was trying to throw out an anchor.

He told police the boat began rocking when his wife lost her balance while sitting down.

Officials at the park in Shelby Township, north of Detroit, say the husband and wife initially were wearing life jackets, but didn't have them on when they fell into the water.

A kayaker heard the couple's yells for help and called 911.

A police spokesperson said the kayaker and the husband worked together to keep the woman's head above water before a rescue boat located them. Crews pulled the woman from the water and began CPR.

The woman later was pronounced dead at a hospital.
