Woman Dies After Being Struck Twice In Hit-And-Run

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating yet another fatal hit-and-run accident.

The situation unfolded around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday on Gratiot Avenue near Glenwood Street, just south of 7 Mile Road on the city's east side.

Police say an unidentified woman was first struck by a motorist who immediately fled the scene. An 18-year-old Eastpointe man who was driving through the area saw the woman lying in the road and stopped his vehicle in an attempt to render aid. At that time, his car was rear-ended by another vehicle. The collision forced the Eastpointe man's car to run over the woman.

The woman was taken to St. John's Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are still trying to identify the woman, who is believed to be between 35- and 40-years-old. Investigators are also trying to develop a description of the first vehicle that struck her.

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident or who has information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
