Witnesses Say Motorcyclist Tried To Pass Church Bus Before Fatal Accident

LYON TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a motorcyclist was killed and his passenger is fighting for her life after the two crashed while apparently trying to pass a church bus in Oakland County.

The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Grand River Avenue just east of Kent Lake Road in Lyon Township.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle tried to pass a church bus and turn in front of it when the driver lost control and crashed into a large boulder on the side of the road. Both the driver and his passenger were ejected from the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist -- a 47-year-old man -- was declared dead at the  scene. A 44-year-old woman who was riding on the back of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police say neither rider was wearing a helmet.

The church bus, which had children onboard, was not involved in the accident. No other injuries were reported.

The accident remains under investigation.
