Where Do Michigan's Hospitals Rank Among The Nation's Best?

DETROIT (WWJ) - U.S. News and World Report is out with its annual ranking of America's best hospitals. This 25th year in a row the magazine has ranked hospitals overall, by region and by specialty.

Here in Michigan, Beaumont, Royal Oak ranked number one in the state and in metro Detroit. Beaumont ranked nationally in 10 specialties, including cardiology, neurology and orthopedics.

What does Beaumont get such high marks?

"It's a combination of a number of factors that includes things like mortality, patient safety, reputation and some of the structural things, like the equipment and technology that we have," said  Beaumont Vice President Quality and Safety, Dr. Sam Flanders.

"And of course it's the work of  all of our fabulous specialties combined that really makes it happen," Flanders said.

In second place, the University of Michigan ranked nationally in eight specialties, including cancer, cardiology and urology.

Third on the list, Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids ranked nationally in five specialties including gastroenterology, gynecology and pulmonology.

Nationally, the top three hospitals in the country are the Mayo Clinic, Boston's Mass General and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
