What To Do When Stopped By Police: Southfield Forum Will Discuss Issue

SOUTHFIELD (CBS DETROIT) - In light of recent national incidents involving alleged police brutality, leaders in Southfield are pulling together some law enforcement experts to talk about 'what to do when stopped by police.'

Southfield City Council President Sylvia Jordan is hosting a Community Justice forum on the issue.

She says the problems continue to boil over in many urban communities involving police brutality as seen recently in Texas.

Jordan wants to educate citizens --on what to do when encountering police and says the the goal is to educate, empower and improve the relationships between young people and the police.

Twenty-six-year-old Brandon Chambers of Southfield has been pulled over a few times and even though he was in the wrong -- he believes race was also a factor.

"I try not to make it a race thing, I try not to make it that but at the same time I kind of think 'what else can you point it to?' For me, I just try to stay calm, try to stay respectful, because all cops are not bad cops," Chambers said.

The forum will be held at the Southfield Public Library Auditorium, Wednesday, June 10, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Featured panelists are Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins, 46th District Judge Sheila Johnson, 46th District Judge Eman Daman, and Former U.S. Attorney - Eastern District of Michigan, Saul Green.
