Welcome To BanglaTown! Bangladeshi Community Organization Office Opens

HAMTRAMCK (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder, local officials and merchants are celebrating the opening of a Bangladeshi community organization office in the Detroit area.

A ribbon-cutting was held Friday for the Bangladeshi American Public Affairs Committee office in Hamtramck.

The office is on Conant, a commercial street in the BanglaTown neighborhood in Detroit and Hamtramck. Bangladeshi restaurants and shops are prominent in Hamtramck and on nearby streets in Detroit.

Efforts are underway to brand BanglaTown as a cultural and tourism destination.

Global Detroit Executive Director Steve Tobocman says "BanglaTown is a largely untold story of how immigrants can work with local residents to revitalize urban neighborhoods in Detroit and Hamtramck."

Global Detroit works to help attract international investment and businesses to the area.
